Fred Gaskins Commits to Auburn, Brings Immediate Impact to Tigers’ Secondary
Auburn has landed a key addition out of the transfer portal as former USF defensive back Fred Gaskins announced his commitment to the Tigers. The move addresses a major offseason need in the secondary and adds an experienced, productive defender to an Auburn defense that was already among the SEC’s best.
Gaskins joins an Auburn unit that finished seventh in total defense in the SEC, allowing just under 230 passing yards per game, fewer than 100 rushing yards per contest, and only 21 points per game. That defensive consistency was a major factor in Auburn’s success, and Gaskins is expected to play a role in maintaining and elevating that standard in 2026 and beyond.
During the 2025 season at USF, Gaskins put together an impressive stat line that reflects both versatility and playmaking ability. He totaled 53 tackles, recorded two interceptions, added two pass breakups, forced one fumble, and recovered two more. His production earned him All-AAC Conference honors, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most reliable defensive backs.

Auburn’s need in the secondary became clear following several key departures. Jay Crawford transferred to Ole Miss, Kayin Lee remains in the transfer portal, and Amon Lane Ganus moved on to USF. Those exits left valuable snaps and leadership roles up for grabs, creating an opportunity for an experienced transfer like Gaskins to step in right away.
What makes Gaskins particularly valuable is his readiness. He arrives with extensive game experience, proven ball skills, and a physical approach that fits well within Auburn’s defensive philosophy. His ability to diagnose plays, finish tackles, and create turnovers gives the Tigers flexibility in how they deploy their defensive backs, whether in coverage heavy looks or more aggressive schemes.
Another major boost for Auburn is eligibility. Gaskins will have two years remaining, allowing him to provide both immediate impact and longer term stability in the secondary. That combination of experience and remaining eligibility is exactly what Auburn sought in the portal as it retools its defensive backfield. With Fred Gaskins now in the fold, Auburn adds a proven, conference honored defender who appears poised to contribute from day one and help anchor a defense that already ranks among the SEC’s toughest.
