Ty Simpson’s Crossroads: Alabama, the NFL, or the Transfer Portal?

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson appears to be standing at one of the most pivotal crossroads of his football career. After leading the Crimson Tide to a College Football Playoff quarterfinal appearance, questions are swirling about what comes next. According to a report from Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, Simpson’s agent made it clear that no final decision has been reached, stating, “No decisions have been made about Ty declaring for the draft at this point and he is still evaluating everything with his family and close advisors.”

That uncertainty leaves three realistic options on the table: declaring for the NFL Draft, returning to Alabama for another season, or entering the transfer portal. Each path comes with its own risks, rewards, and long-term implications.

The Case for Returning to Alabama

There is a strong argument for Ty Simpson running it back in Tuscaloosa. In 2025, Simpson put together an impressive season, throwing for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just five interceptions while guiding Alabama to the CFP quarterfinals. He was efficient, poised, and consistently made high-level throws in big moments, helping Alabama navigate a challenging SEC slate.

One of the most overlooked aspects of Simpson’s season was how much he carried the offense despite a lack of balance. Alabama averaged just 104 rushing yards per game in SEC play, a far cry from the dominant run games that have historically defined the program. If Alabama can resurrect a consistent and physical rushing attack, it would take significant pressure off Simpson and elevate the entire offense.

There will be changes around him. With leading receiver Germie Bernard departing for the NFL, the next wave of pass catchers, Ryan Williams, Isaiah Horton, and Lotzeir Brooks, will need to step into larger roles. If that group develops quickly, Simpson could be positioned for an even bigger year, potentially pushing Alabama deeper into the playoff conversation and strengthening his draft stock.

The Case for the NFL Draft

From a pure projection standpoint, it’s easy to see why NFL teams would be intrigued. Simpson checks many of the boxes, evaluators look for in a franchise quarterback. At 6’2”, 210 pounds, he has the prototypical frame to withstand the physical demands of the league.

More importantly, the intangibles are there. Simpson’s pocket presence stands out on film. He processes defenses quickly, throws with anticipation, and shows the ability to make every throw on the field with accuracy. Those traits, decision making, timing, and composure are often what separate long term NFL starters from short term placeholders.

While he isn’t an elite athlete, Simpson is a better mover than he’s often credited for. Improving his lateral quickness and ability to beat defenders to the edge when escaping pressure would only enhance his game at the next level. Even so, his poise and command suggest he has the makeup of a quarterback who could become the cornerstone of an NFL franchise.

The Case for the Transfer Portal

The most intriguing, and perhaps strategic option, is entering the transfer portal. NFL draft evaluations on Simpson are far from unanimous. Some scouts view him as a first-round quarterback, while others project him as a late second or early third round pick.

If Simpson isn’t comfortable with that range, staying in college while changing environments could be appealing. Entering the portal would instantly make him one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the country, complete with a substantial NIL valuation. Contending programs would line up for a proven, playoff tested quarterback with NFL traits.

A move to a system tailored to his strengths could give Simpson the chance to elevate his production, compete for a national championship, and even enter the Heisman Trophy conversation. More importantly, it could position him as a clear cut top two quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, removing much of the uncertainty that exists now.

What Should Ty Simpson Do?

If the goal is immediate opportunity, the NFL makes sense. If the goal is comfort and continuity, returning to Alabama offers stability and unfinished business. If the goal is maximizing long-term value, both financially and professionally, the transfer portal may be the smartest play.

Another dominant college season, especially in the right system, could solidify Ty Simpson as a no-doubt franchise quarterback at the next level. Sometimes the best move isn’t rushing the process, it’s controlling it.
