Jackson Arnold Heads West: A Fresh Start at UNLV Under Dan Mullen

Jackson Arnold is once again on the move.

The former five-star PLUS quarterback prospect has entered the transfer portal for a second time, this time heading west to Las Vegas to play for UNLV under head coach Dan Mullen. For Arnold, the move represents another opportunity to reset his career and finally turn flashes of elite talent into sustained success at the college level.

Coming out of Texas, Arnold was one of the most highly regarded quarterback recruits in the country. He committed to Oklahoma with expectations of becoming the future face of the program. Early on, the trajectory appeared promising, but circumstances around him quickly began to shift.

After offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby departed Norman to take the head coaching job at Mississippi State, Oklahoma’s offense entered a period of instability. Arnold struggled to find consistent footing as the Sooners’ starting quarterback. An inconsistent offensive line, constant changes within the wide receiver corps, and a lack of continuity on offense made development difficult. Eventually, offensive coordinator Seth Littrell was fired, and Arnold was replaced in the starting lineup by freshman Michael Hawkins Jr.

Despite being benched, Arnold still delivered one of the most memorable performances of Oklahoma’s 2024 season. Against Alabama, he returned to the field and played a pivotal role in the Sooners’ dominant 24–3 victory. Arnold carried the ball 25 times for 131 rushing yards, showcasing his toughness, athleticism, and willingness to do whatever was needed to help his team win. The performance was a reminder of the raw ability that once made him one of the most coveted recruits in the nation.

Following the season, Arnold entered the transfer portal and landed at Auburn, hoping a change of scenery and a new offensive system would spark a breakout year. Unfortunately, the results were familiar. Arnold again struggled to establish rhythm and confidence within the offense. During Auburn’s 33–24 win over Arkansas, he was replaced in the second half by Ashton Daniels. That victory would go on to be Auburn’s first and only SEC win of the season.

Just one week later, head coach Hugh Freeze was fired, signaling yet another reset for the program and further uncertainty for Arnold’s future. With Auburn entering a transition phase, the writing was on the wall.

Now, Arnold heads to UNLV, where he will play for Dan Mullen. Mullen is a coach widely respected for his ability to develop quarterbacks and tailor offenses to their strengths. For Arnold, this could be the most important move of his career. Mullen’s system emphasizes quarterback mobility, decision making, and confidence. These are traits Arnold has shown in flashes but has struggled to consistently display amid constant change.

Las Vegas offers a fresh environment, lower external pressure, and a coaching staff that understands how to rebuild a quarterback’s confidence. If Arnold can finally find stability, consistency, and belief in himself, there is still time for him to write a successful chapter in his college football story.

Jackson Arnold’s journey has been anything but smooth, but the talent has never been in question. At UNLV, he now has a chance to prove that the flashes weren’t flukes and that his best football may still be ahead of him.
