Derrick Nix to Alabama Official

Former Auburn offensive coordinator Derrick Nix is headed west on I-20, but this time he’s crossing one of the fiercest rivalry lines in college football. Nix has been hired by Alabama to serve as the Crimson Tide’s wide receivers coach, adding another layer of intrigue to an already heated Iron Bowl rivalry.

Nix arrives in Tuscaloosa after a brief but eventful stint at Auburn, where he spent the 2025 season navigating one of the most turbulent years in recent program history. Following the firing of former Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze, Nix was elevated to sole play caller for an offense that, for much of the season, struggled mightily. While the overall body of work drew criticism, the final three games under Nix’s full control told a far more nuanced story.

In those three games, Auburn’s offense averaged 507 total yards per contest and put up an average of 40 points per game. The stretch began with a 45–38 overtime loss on the road against Vanderbilt, a game in which Auburn moved the ball at will but fell short late. That was followed by a dominant 62–17 victory over Mercer, showcasing the offensive ceiling many believed Auburn possessed all season. The run concluded with a 27–20 loss to Alabama in the Iron Bowl, a game in which Auburn remained competitive deep into the fourth quarter against a more talented Crimson Tide roster.

Before his time on the Plains, Nix built a strong résumé at Ole Miss, where he served as associate head coach and wide receivers coach. He earned a reputation as both a developer of talent and a steady presence on staff, particularly in managing receiver rooms that consistently produced at a high level in the SEC. His experience coaching wideouts makes his transition to Alabama a natural fit, especially after the departure of JaMarcus Shephard, who was recently hired as the head coach at Oregon State.

Nix’s coaching journey is rooted in Alabama. A standout running back at Etowah High School in Attalla, he went on to have a decorated playing career at Southern Miss. Nix was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 1998 and earned first-team All-Conference USA honors twice, in 1999 and 2002. His background as a running back has long informed his offensive philosophy, emphasizing balance, physicality, and versatility.

Now, Nix finds himself on the opposite sideline of a rivalry he knows all too well. His familiarity with Auburn’s personnel, offensive tendencies, and culture adds another chess piece to the annual Iron Bowl matchup. For Alabama, the hire represents an experienced SEC coach with deep regional ties. For Auburn fans, it’s another reminder of how thin the line can be between bitter rivals in the ever evolving world of college football coaching.
